David has become a fixture on the Toronto singer songwriter scene playing live, weekly, at clubs and coffee houses across the city. His first full length album is due June 15 2015.
“Finding the extraordinary in the ordinary, sometimes with an ironic twist, is a theme that runs through Rootsy singer/songwriter David Storey’s debut EP Movin On.” Toronto Moon Magazine
“There is a lot of humor in the lyrics, depicting the challenges of everyday life in a very unromanticized way. You don’t always know whether to laugh or pity Storey’s stories, because they very well may be your own.” Canada In Tune Magazine
“It was a thrill to study his work” In The Hills Magazine
Roots/folk/rock delivered with passion and commitment, leavened with a healthy dose of humor, David Storey’s music is infused with influences from Steve Earl to Ben Harper to John Prine.
If there is one word to describe David and his writing it is character. His simple rootsy song’s feature small time heroes, losers looking for a second chance and wanna be bad asses coming to terms with reality. They include tales of love, the gentle humor of family life, the irony of growing old and the paradox of living in our hyper wired world.
David started his musical journey singing in the St. Georges College choir where he toured across North America. In high school he played folk and bluegrass on his own and in various bands. During his early twenties he played southern roots rock in bar bands across the northern part of Toronto. After a brief period playing punk and new wave in the city he went back to writing his own roots inspired material appearing in clubs like the Horseshoe, Sneaky Dees, Free Times and Lee’s Palace. He received radio play on college and cutting edge radio and a video for “She’s My Girl” was in medium rotation on Much Music. He was nominated for a CASBY and a Toronto Music Award. Now Magazine said “Storey creates a beautifully rendered mix of electric/acoustic/ folk rock originals” while Toronto Life Magazine thanked him for “crafting intelligent songs”.
About this time David became a father and decided playing in bars might not be the most suitable vocation for raising children. So he switched gears and started directing music videos. (I know how does that happen, it’s a long story). After receiving major attention, a Juno nomination and a number of CMVA’s for directing Tom Cochrane’s “Life Is a Highway” video he was given the opportunity to helm many hour long music specials for everyone from Anne Murray to Corey Hart. But it was a comedic video for Stompin Tom Connor’s “Margo’s Got the Cargo” that was to set his life for the next twenty years. From this very funny video he went on to direct many comedy projects culminating in his developing (along with Brent Butt), executive producing and directing the iconic Canadian TV show Corner Gas.
With his children grown and Corner Gas in reruns David discovered he had some time on his hands. In November 2011 he went on stage for the first time in 21 years at an open mike in Vancouver and got hooked all over again. He is now back in the Toronto area and is starting to build his musical life once more writing new material, opening for other acts and appearing as a feature artist at coffee houses and clubs around the city. He has an EP – Movin On – and a number of videos you can check out at davidstoreymusic.com. Hs first full length album is due out in June 2015.
